The Architecture of Human Innovation: The Story of Dr. Michael Lewrick.
Innovation is never born in comfortable stagnation. It emerges when curiosity meets relentless movement, when systems thinking bridges human emotion, and when we dare to step outside established paradigms.
Born in Munich on January 24th, 1978, Michael Lewrick’s earliest memories were shaped by kinetic energy. As a boy, he carved alpine descents on skis and snowboards, tackled rugged trails on mountain bikes, and mastered winds across open waters. Athletics instilled an enduring mental discipline: balance, instant feedback loops, and an intuitive mastery of momentum.
Traveling the world with his parents sparked an early fascination with diverse cultures and global systems. Conventional schooling felt static and confined. A rigid curriculum built on rote memorization could never engage a mind wired for discovery. School was simply a launchpad to complete before engaging with the real world.
After his gymnasium years, Michael completed a two-year commercial banking apprenticeship, mastering financial mechanisms and risk governance. Yet banking halls could not contain his ambition. His journey accelerated with a US Congress scholarship to live and work in New York City. Stepping onto Manhattan thrust him into the epicenter of commerce and digital transformation, igniting a life across Nice, Pretoria, Mossel Bay, Edinburgh, Bristol, Singapore, and Palo Alto.
His academic path mirrored this interdisciplinary drive: combining Business Administration and Information Technology, an MBA in Entrepreneurship at Bristol Business School, and a doctorate from Edinburgh Napier University in 2008 analyzing how startup innovation capabilities transition into resilient corporate systems.
In 2004, a serendipitous encounter altered his life. Michael met Professor Larry Leifer, founding director of the Stanford Center for Design Research. Recognizing a shared obsession with human-centered engineering, Leifer invited Michael to collaborate at Stanford University. This sparked a partnership spanning over twenty years, elevating Design Thinking from a product tool into a comprehensive management philosophy.
This breakthrough inspired the Wiley Design Thinking series, reaching over three million readers across twenty-five languages. Frameworks like Business Ecosystem Design, Design Thinking for Humanity, and Human-Centric AI became benchmarks adopted by global Fortune 500 leadership teams.
In 2008, Michael relocated to Switzerland. As Chief Innovation Officer at Swisscom and chair of the Corporate Innovation Board, he introduced disciplined innovation accounting, guiding the enterprise into a dynamic market leader. He subsequently co-founded Swisscom Blockchain AG as COO, before serving as Senior Director leading the Deloitte Innovation Labs and Applied Design practice in Zurich.
Yet breakthrough innovation demands cognitive stillness. In April 2025, Michael established his family residence and executive headquarters in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. Nestled between alpine peaks and the Rhine Valley, Vaduz offers an atmosphere of silence and contemplation: an ideal sanctuary for deep research, writing, and strategic synthesis, seamlessly connected to global technology epicenters.
From Vaduz, Michael operates two international entities: Lewrick & Company and Lewrick Ventures. Through Lewrick & Company, he advises multinational boards—including Tencent, ByteDance, Ping An, BBVA, Siemens, Allianz, HP, BeOne Medical, JTI, and Swisscom—on Agentic AI orchestration, ethical guardrails, and new business ecosystems. Through Lewrick Ventures, he co-designs agile global initiatives. Locally, Michael partners with the Formatio school on future educational Innovation Labs, while directing his global non-profit initiative, Co-Create Your Future with AI.
Departing from sterile corporate venues, Michael opens his private residence in Vaduz to executive boards for bespoke strategy retreats, book signings, and transformation masterclasses—booked directly via info@lewrick.ch.
His research continues to shape international executive education. Today, Michael is an invited Visiting Professor at the University of Liechtenstein, Associate Professor at Franklin University Switzerland, and collaborates with the Africa Business School at UM6P. He directs executive bootcamps across Switzerland’s premier universities—including FHNW, HSLU, HWZ, and FH Graubünden—while serving as a Senior Expert on Business Ecosystem Design at the Drucker School of Management.
His literary canon stands as a global compass. From The Design Thinking Playbook and The Design Thinking Life Playbook to AI and Innovation, co-authored with former NASA Chief AI Officer Dr. Omar Hatamleh, and his landmark volume Design Thinking for Humanity, Michael Lewrick ranks among the world’s foremost innovation authorities.
From alpine stillness to global stages, Michael Lewrick empowers leaders to design with empathy, think in ecosystems, and co-create an authentic human future.
